Experience Fauna and flora
Ax-les-Thermes has a national forest covering an area of 708.32 hectares, with an altitude ranging from 1,200 to 1,797 meters. It is a natural area of ecological, faunal and floristic interest, a natural space inventoried due to its remarkable character.
During the last naturalist inventory, species of pine marten, wild boar, capercaillie, and black woodpecker were recorded.
The Orlu National Wildlife Refuge, covering 4,000 hectares, is located less than ten kilometers from Ax-les-Thermes.
The region is characterized by one of the highest densities of chamois in the Pyrenean mountain range. It is possible to spot other, rarer species, such as the marmot, the bearded vulture, the capercaillie, the golden eagle, or even the Pyrenean grey partridge, the Pyrenean rock ptarmigan, and the Pyrenean lizard.
